USI Transforms Into AMLÉ: A New Chapter in Student Representation
This isn’t just a change of title — it’s a statement of intent.
The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has officially changed its name to AMLÉ – Aontas na Mac Léinn in Éirinn, marking a new era in student representation in Ireland. The change, formally adopted at Comhdháil AMLÉ 2025, reflects the union’s longstanding commitment to the Irish language, equality, and progressive student politics.
With overwhelming support for the constitutional amendments passed last month (see full text), AMLÉ steps forward with a renewed identity but the same values that have guided the union for over 66 years.
Chris Clifford, President of AMLÉ, addressed the transition in an internal email to officers:
“This is both a necessary point of continuity and the end of an era. The point of the organisation isn’t its brand or its name, but what it stands for — and we’re lucky that in every possible sense, AMLÉ stands for exactly the same thing that USI has stood for all these years. But this change also reflects something deeper — a renewed and unapologetic commitment to the Irish language, and to making it a visible, living part of student life across the island.”
Constitutional Change for a Changing Ireland
The rebrand was made possible by a series of constitutional amendments debated and passed at Comhdháil AMLÉ, including new clauses recognising AMLÉ’s bilingual nature, its expanded representative structures, and its formal commitment to linguistic and cultural rights. These changes empower the union to reach more students and speak with greater clarity and authenticity on behalf of the diverse communities it represents.
The transition to new @amle.ie email addresses and organisational materials is already underway. Members are encouraged to embrace the change, while reflecting on the legacy of USI and building on it for a new generation.
This isn’t just a change of title — it’s a statement of intent. We want the press, the public, and the people we work with to find us as we are now: renewed, proud of our roots, and presenting ourselves in a way that reflects the values and energy of today’s student movement.
As the union moves forward, its mission remains unchanged: to defend, support, and elevate students across Ireland.
Ní neart go cur le chéile.
There is no strength without unity.
