'AMLÉ' (Aontas na Mac Léinn in Éirinn) is the new name for the Union of Students in Ireland. It's a direct translation.

96% of students in GMIT have chosen to remain affiliated to AMLÉ (Union of Students’ in Ireland). With a total valid poll of 1076 votes, 1032 students voted ‘Yes’ to affiliation, with just 44 opposing and 6 spoilt votes.

This result will see GMIT Students’ Union, which represents Mayo, Letterfrack, Mountbellew and the Main Galway campuses remain one of AMLÉ’s member organisations.

The result has been welcomed by AMLÉ President Joe O’Connor, himself a GMIT graduate. GMITSU is the 10th largest member of AMLÉ.

AMLÉ President Joe O’Connor said:

“I am delighted that AMLÉ has received such overwhelming support from GMIT students. This reaffirms the broad support that AMLÉ has received from students across Ireland for its campaigns. As an alumnus of GMIT, I am proud that AMLÉ has such a high level of support here. I look forward to continually working with GMIT towards ensuring equity of access to higher education and the promotion of job creation.”
